The last independent Jewish entity prior to the founding of the state of Israel. The Hasmonean revolt was a defensive measure to protect the nation from assimilation into the Greek civilization. The uprising led to a Jewish kingdom governed by a family of priests that also took upon themselves the title "King". The latter kings had adopted a Greek manner that led to an open breach between the monarch and the people.
